Countdown to 1 field set in Funny Car; other battles still rage on

Although the final finishing order is yet to be determined, the Funny Car class is the first to set its 10-driver field for the Countdown to 1 playoffs that begin after the next race, the Mac Tools U.S. Nationals. A combination of round-wins by Jack Beckman (pictured) and Mike Neff and early losses by Del Worsham and Bob Tasca III at the Toyo Tires NHRA Nationals sealed the field.

The Funny Car drivers in the Countdown will be Tim Wilkerson, Tony Pedregon, Robert Hight, Cruz Pedregon, Ashley Force, John Force, Gary Densham, Ron Capps, Beckman, and Neff.

Doug Herbert joined the list in Top Fuel, in which eight of its 10 positions are locked. Tony Schumacher, Antron Brown, Larry Dixon, Cory McClenathan, Rod Fuller, Brandon Bernstein, and Hillary Will had already clinched heading into eliminations. Dave Grubnic, Doug Kalitta, and Morgan Lucas will vie for the final two spots at the U.S. Nationals; the three drivers are within 10 points of one another, with Grubnic in ninth, Kalitta in 10th, and Lucas in 11th, just six points outside the playoff field.

Dave Connolly, Mike Edwards, and V. Gaines joined the playoff bound in Pro Stock, where Greg Anderson, Kurt Johnson, Jason Line, Jeg Coughlin, and Allen Johnson already have clinched. Ron Krisher has a solid hold on ninth, leading-11th place Warren Johnson by 98 points. Greg Stanfield will try to hold off Johnson in Indy for the 10th and final spot; he leads "the Professor" by 73 points.

Eddie Krawiec, Angelle Sampey, and Matt Guidera clinched in Pro Stock Motorcycle to join Andrew Hines, Matt Smith, Chip Ellis, and Chris Rivas. Craig Treble, Steve Johnson, Karen Stoffer, and Hector Arana are battling for the final three spots.
